On importance of psychological assessments

Psychological assessments allow to evaluate person’s mental health and various mental and intellectual abilities. Assessments are conducted by professionally trained psychologists, the testing process is often performed by psychometrics, while evaluation of results and final interview is done by a psychologist. There are two main types of psychological assessments: clinical assessments and psychoeducational assessments. Clinical assessments are used to identify traits of diseases such as with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (ODD), autism spectrum disorders incl. Asperger syndrome, schizophrenia, social emotional disorders incl. anxiety and depression, stress and anger management, etc. Psychoeducational testing allows to detect learning disabilities and attention problems. Another subset of psychoeducational assessments is gifted testing that helps to identify gifted children and place them in educational programs with advanced curriculum. It is essential to contact the psychologist at the first sign of psychological problems, the earlier it is detected the better is the chance that it could be effectively remedied by a psychological treatment. Often, it is essential to use multi-modal treatment methods including psychological therapy with clinical psychologist and medication prescribed by a psychiatrist.
